Players are assessed regularly and advance when they demonstrate mastery of their current stage's competencies.

What is the first stage of the player pathway?

Accepted Answer

The first stage is Discover Chess, designed for complete beginners (typically ages 5+). Players learn how pieces move, basic rules, check and checkmate, and chess notation. No prior experience is needed — just curiosity and a willingness to learn.

What rating do you need for High Performance training?

Accepted Answer

Elite High Performance typically begins around 1600–2000 ELO. Players at this stage are competitive tournament players targeting provincial and national selection. Training focuses on advanced opening theory, complex calculation, tournament preparation, and game analysis.

How long does it take to go from beginner to master level?

Progression varies by individual. With consistent training (weekly coaching plus independent study), most players reach intermediate level (1200–1600) within 1–2 years, advanced level (1600–2000) within 3–5 years, and expert/master level (2000+) within 5–10 years. Our structured curriculum and regular assessment help players progress efficiently.

What ages are accepted in the player pathway?

Accepted Answer

We accept players from age 5 and up. The pathway is designed to accommodate children, teenagers, and adults. Junior players follow the foundation stages, while competitive players advance through the development, intermediate, advanced, and elite stages based on skill rather than age.

What programmes are recommended for each pathway stage?

Discover Chess and Beginner stages: group coaching (R800/month). Development and Intermediate: 1-on-1 coaching (R2,050/month) combined with Saturday Club. Advanced and Elite: High-Performance training (R400/month) plus tournament participation. Provincial, National, and International stages: masterclass sessions and individualised training plans.

How are players assessed and promoted between stages?

Players are assessed through regular evaluation by FIDE-certified coaches, tournament performance, and official rating progress (CHESSA and FIDE ratings). When a player demonstrates mastery of their current stage's skills and milestones, they advance to the next stage with an updated training plan.

Can adults join the player pathway?

Yes. While many of our students are juniors, the player pathway is open to all ages. Adults can join at any stage — from complete beginner to competitive tournament player — and progress through the same structured curriculum with age-appropriate coaching.
