Matthew Shapiro and Luka Breed of SACS High School won Wynberg Boys’ High School’s annual Doubles Blitz Championship on 16 October, adding a shared victory to their school’s chess achievements.
The tournament brought together players from eight schools: SACS, Wynberg Boys’ High, Wynberg Girls’ High, Bergvliet, St Joseph’s, Westerford, Rondebosch Boys’ High and Fish Hoek.
For Matthew, the result continues a successful year. He won chess gold at the inaugural Maccabi SA National Junior Games in Johannesburg in September. Earlier in the year, he finished fourth in the Open Blitz section of the 2026 South African Open, scoring seven points from nine games and receiving the Best Junior award.
The doubles title belongs to both partners, and African Chess Lounge congratulates Matthew and Luka on their achievement for SACS.
